Somerville is one of the most densely populated cities in New England, immediately north of Cambridge and Boston. What the Fluff?, a festival honoring the local invention of Marshmallow Fluff, fills Union Square each fall with stages, midway games, and a bus-route detour on Somerville Avenue; the 2026 edition marked its twenty-first year. Tufts University commencement in May and move-in in late August bring campus traffic controls. Assembly Row hosts seasonal outdoor events on its private plazas, and Somerville’s Porchfest and ArtBeat draw spring and summer crowds across the squares.

What affects the price

Somerville quotes reflect density above all. Davis Square and Union Square offer no practical bus curb, so providers stage remotely and return, adding time; Assembly Row follows the development’s own loading rules; and festival weekends close squares entirely. McGrath Highway and Interstate 93 back up at rush hour, and Logan runs are short but add tunnel tolls and terminal queues. Several pickups on narrow residential streets multiply boarding time. Ask providers to itemize minimum hours, deadhead, tolls, airport charges, parking, waiting, gratuity, and overtime; availability varies by date, vehicle, and provider, so confirm in writing.

Timing and seasonality

October brings HONK! to Davis Square (October 9–11 in 2026) and the What the Fluff? festival to Union Square in early fall, both closing their squares and detouring buses. May brings Tufts commencement and Porchfest, and late August brings Tufts move-in on campus streets. Assembly Row outdoor events run through summer. Winter snow narrows Somerville’s dense streets and can make residential pickups impractical for large vehicles, and Interstate 93 and the tunnels slow in storms.
