A city permit does not authorize Harvard or MIT property, which the universities control. Logan Airport is reached through Boston by the tolled Sumner or Ted Williams tunnels.

Harvard Commencement in late May and MIT Commencement the same week fill every hotel in Cambridge and Boston and bring police-managed traffic to Harvard Square and Kendall Square. Head of the Charles Regatta, held over a weekend in October, lines the Charles River with spectators and closes riverfront lanes near the Harvard boathouses. Riverbend Park Sundays turn Memorial Drive into a car-free promenade from spring through fall. Kendall Square hosts corporate conferences and biotech events year-round, Harvard Square hosts university reunions in late May and early June, and Central Square hosts festivals and music venues that draw evening groups.

What affects the price

Cambridge totals rise with time lost to constrained streets. Harvard Square and Kendall Square offer little bus curb, so providers may stage remotely and return; Memorial Drive closures and construction force detours along Mount Auburn Street or Massachusetts Avenue; and commencement or regatta weekends bring police-directed traffic. Logan runs add Boston tunnel tolls and terminal queues. Several hotel pickups across the squares multiply boarding time. Ask providers to itemize minimum hours, deadhead, tolls, airport charges, parking, waiting, gratuity, and overtime; availability varies by date, vehicle, and provider, so confirm in writing.

Timing and seasonality
