Get the schedule from the funeral home first: visitation, service time and place, when the procession leaves, the cemetery, and the repast location and time. Decide who rides in the family vehicle, usually the immediate family and sometimes clergy, and whether a second vehicle is needed for elderly relatives or out-of-town mourners. Ask the funeral director where an outside limousine or shuttle lines up in the procession and whether a funeral flag or placard is provided. Give the provider the full timeline, the addresses, and the funeral director's name and number so the driver can coordinate on the day. If the family goes from the cemetery to a repast at a home or a hall, include that leg and the ride back to the start. Ask for a plain dark vehicle with no party lighting, and a driver who has done funeral work.

Choosing a vehicle size

Immediate family usually rides in a stretch limousine or an executive Sprinter with forward-facing seats and a low step for older relatives. A group of out-of-town mourners fits a small coach or Sprinter for the service, cemetery, and repast loop. A party bus is not appropriate. What affects the price

Funeral transportation is usually a short hire of three to five hours, so the provider's minimum hours often set the price. After that it is the number of vehicles, the distance between the service, the cemetery, and the repast, and the waiting time during the service and the committal. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, a funeral home that offers a limousine must list it on its line-by-line General Price List, priced as a flat fee, by the hour, or by mileage. Families may compare that line with an outside quote and choose either. Under the current reservation terms a deposit of typically 50% holds the date, the balance is due before the trip, and full payment is typically required when the service is within 7 days of booking, which is the usual case here. The signed contract controls, and some providers adjust terms for bereavement bookings.

Safety, rules, and what to verify

Processions follow local traffic rules, and whether a procession may move through intersections together differs by state and city. The funeral director and any police escort manage that; the outside driver should follow the director's instructions and hold position in line. Ask the company whether the driver has worked funerals and knows to keep headlights on and stay in place. For older relatives, ask about the step height, a handrail, and whether a lift-equipped vehicle is available.
