A minimum is the fewest hours a provider will bill you for, and nearly every party bus and limo quote has one. Minimums run longer on Friday and Saturday evenings, on prom and graduation weekends, and on holidays, and they change by vehicle class and by provider. If your night is shorter than the minimum, you still pay the minimum. So build an itinerary that uses the hours, or ask about daytime, weekday or one-way point-to-point options.

Minimums exist because the provider hands you a vehicle and a driver for the whole evening. A two-hour booking at 8 p.m. on a Saturday still takes that bus off the board for every other Saturday group, so providers set a floor that makes the trade worth it. The floor is their call, not a law, and it moves from provider to provider and market to market.

How to think about a minimum
You pay the minimum whether you use it or not
If your night runs three hours and the minimum is five, the quote says five. Stretching the itinerary to use that time is almost always better value than leaving the hours on the table.
Minimums follow demand
Peak evenings and peak seasons carry longer minimums, because those are the nights providers turn other groups away. Daytime and midweek requests usually come back shorter.
The vehicle class matters
Big party buses and coaches often carry longer minimums than a sedan or a small van on the same date. Sizing the vehicle right can shorten the minimum and lower the rate at once.
Split shifts are their own question
A wedding with a ceremony run and a late return may come back as two blocks with a gap, each with its own minimum, or as one continuous booking. Ask which way the provider writes it.
Overtime is priced on its own
Running past your booked time is billed in set increments at a stated rate. Find out the increment, and whether the driver can even stay late, which depends on who has the bus next.

Why is the minimum longer on Saturday night?
Because a Saturday-evening bus can usually be sold to someone else for the whole evening. Providers put longer minimums on their busiest blocks so one short booking does not cost them a full-night rental. Fridays, Sundays, weekdays and daytimes tend to come back shorter.
Can I book a party bus for two hours?
Sometimes, usually on a weekday or daytime slot, or as a point-to-point transfer. On a peak Saturday evening, most providers will quote their minimum block instead. Ask for the shortest block on your date, then fill it rather than fight it.
Do minimums apply to shuttles and coaches too?
Usually, though the shape differs. Shuttles running wedding loops get quoted per block or per loop, and long-distance coaches often get quoted by the day. Ask how the provider structures the booking for your trip.
What happens if we finish early?
You pay for the block you booked. Getting back early does not shrink the total under most contracts. One more reason to build an itinerary that uses the hours you are already buying.
How do prom-season minimums affect a school group?
Prom Saturdays are among the busiest dates of the year in a lot of markets, so long minimums are normal. Prom groups also run into provider rules on minors and alcohol, which differ by state and by company. Our prom page lists the questions parents and schools should be asking.
