Tipping Guide Calculator

Work out a gratuity amount from the quoted total and a percentage you choose. Providers handle driver gratuity differently: some include it in the total, some suggest a percentage, and some leave it to the group. Check your written quote before using this tool so you do not tip twice.

What the Tipping Guide Calculator is for

Tipping the driver at the end of a long night is easy to forget and awkward to improvise, especially with a hat going round a tired group. This calculator shows the gratuity at four levels for your rental total, so your group can agree on an amount beforehand and have cash or a payment ready.

Start with your written quote. Some providers already include gratuity, some suggest a percentage, some leave it entirely to you. If it's already in there, you may not need this tool at all, except to decide whether to add something extra for a driver who went out of their way.

How to use it

  1. Check your quote for gratuity. Before you type anything, look for a gratuity, service or driver fee line on your written quote. If gratuity is already included, whatever you work out here is an optional extra rather than the tip itself.
  2. Enter the total rental cost. Enter the amount you want to tip on, usually the rental cost before taxes and fees. Tipping on the rental alone keeps the math in line with how gratuity is normally described.
  3. Compare the four tiers. Read the dollar amount at 15, 18, 20 and 25 percent, with the service each tier describes. Pick the one that matches what your group wants to give.
  4. Add the tip to the group split. Put your chosen percentage into the Cost Split Calculator so everyone chips in for the tip with their share, instead of the organizer covering it alone.

Reading the results

Each card multiplies your rental cost by a fixed percentage: 15 for good service, 18 for great, 20 for excellent, and 25 for outstanding service, holidays or large groups. The descriptions underneath are the tool's own suggestions for picking a tier.

The 20 percent card is highlighted and marked Recommended. That's the tool's default, not a rule and not something a provider requires. The tiers are planning assumptions. If your provider publishes a suggested gratuity, or your quote already has one, that written figure wins over anything here.

Only these four levels are shown. If your group wants a different percentage, multiply the rental cost by it yourself, or use the tip field in the Cost Split Calculator, which takes any percentage.

Worked example: Tipping on a $1,200 rental

With the default $1,200 entered, the cards read $180.00 at 15 percent, $216.00 at 18 percent, $240.00 at 20 percent and $300.00 at 25 percent. The 20 percent card is highlighted.

Say your group of 20 settles on 20 percent. That's $240, or $12 each. Rather than passing a hat at the end of the night, put 20 percent in the tip field of the Cost Split Calculator so it's inside everyone's share from the start.

Now suppose you reread the quote and spot a 15 percent gratuity line already in there. Your driver is being tipped $180 as it stands. If the service turns out to be outstanding, the group could add the $60 difference to reach 20 percent, but nobody owes it.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Tipping twice

If gratuity is already in the written quote, the driver is covered. Adding a full tier on top doubles it. Anything extra is an optional thank-you for great service, not a second tip.

  • Tipping on taxes and fees

Entering the grand total with taxes, fuel lines or cleaning fees inflates every tier. Enter only the rental cost you actually mean to base the gratuity on.

  • Leaving the tip until the end

Collecting cash from a tired group at 1 a.m. rarely goes well. Agree the amount beforehand and put it in everyone's share when you first collect.

  • Forgetting multiple drivers

If your group takes several vehicles, every driver gets tipped. Enter each vehicle's rental cost separately and work out that driver's gratuity on its own.

Your price depends on the date, the city, how many hours you need, the bus and your group size. These come from quotes we have actually sent: the low end up to the middle of the range. Busy Saturdays cost more, quiet weeknights less. Minimum hours, the drive to your pickup, tolls and gratuity all move the final number.

Tipping Guide Calculator questions, answered

Why does the tipping calculator highlight 20 percent?

It marks 20 percent as its recommended default, described as excellent service that goes beyond expectations. That's a starting point, not a rule and not a provider requirement. If your quote includes gratuity, or the provider suggests an amount, use that instead. Otherwise pick the tier that matches the service you got.

How do I know whether gratuity is already included?

Look on the written quote or contract for a line labelled gratuity, driver gratuity or service charge, and read how it's described. A service charge doesn't always reach the driver. If the wording is unclear, ask the company straight out whether the driver receives it and whether extra tipping is expected.

Should the tip be based on the rental or the full invoice?

Most groups tip on the rental cost alone, leaving out taxes, fuel lines, tolls and cleaning fees. The calculator multiplies whatever you enter, so decide which figure you're using and enter that. Being consistent matters more than the exact base, as long as the group agrees beforehand.

When would the 25 percent tier make sense?

The tool suggests 25 percent for holidays, exceptional effort or large groups. Think of a driver who handled a late-running wedding calmly, kept a big lively group in order, or worked New Year's Eve. It's entirely optional, so use it only if your group feels the service earned it.

Can I enter a tip percentage other than the four shown?

Not here; the tiers are fixed. For any other percentage, multiply the rental cost by it yourself, or use the Cost Split Calculator, where the tip field takes any value and folds it into everyone's share automatically.

Is it better to tip in cash or by card?

It depends on the provider. Some add gratuity to the final invoice, some take card tips at the end, and some drivers prefer cash. Ask the company how gratuity is handled and whether a card tip reaches the driver in full. If you're going with cash, collect it alongside everyone's share before the trip.

How do I tip when the group uses several vehicles?

Each driver gets tipped for their own vehicle. Enter each vehicle's rental cost separately and pick a tier, or apply the same percentage across the board. If one written quote covers all the vehicles, ask the company how gratuity is divided among the drivers.

  • 61% of every request we get is for a Saturday, and another 20% for a Friday. That is why Saturday availability is the first thing to ask about.

    All markets · June 2023 – August 2026

  • Requests peak in April, July, and August, when prom, graduation, and wedding season all land at once. Spring dates are the ones that go first.

    All markets · June 2023 – August 2026

  • 4 hours is by far the most common ask: 71% of the requests that name a length come in at exactly that. Another 18% want 6 hours or more.
